We are not quite novels. The analogy he is looking for is almost there. We are not quite short stories. At this point, his life is seeming closest to that. In the end, we are collected works.”

i have reason to believe gabrielle zevin is rapidly becoming one of my favorite writers of all time.

i’d read “tomorrow […]” a few months back and absolutely devoured it. i picked up “the storied life […]” because it had been recommended by a favorite booktuber — and because i was massively curious — and could not be gladder for it.

what a splendid little book. it has a slow start, but you are nonetheless sucked into the life of these characters. they are cynical and sad and flawed, but they are so wonderfully human that you can’t help but want good things for them. tied in with the setting of the small-town island and its charming bookstore, with the prefaces to each chapter being that of fikry’s notes to maya/amy, it makes for such a heartwarming read.

one thing about gabrielle zevin, though, she sure knows how to write death (flash back to “The NPC,” which i still think about regularly). it was painful, yet beautiful. and she’s a brilliant storyteller for that.

overall, i think gabrielle zevin’s works are some to definitely check out. i loved tomorrow, loved this, and will continue to browse through her collection of works. good read.
