Oedipus Rex
by Sophocles
Thebes is suffering a dangerous plague that is killing citizens, and Oedipus, king of Thebes discovers that the plague is a consequence of the fact that the King Laius’ (the previous king) murderer not having been found and proved guilty yet. In the search for Laius’ murderer, Oedipus contacts with some prophets and discovers unsettling truths about his past and future.
This deals with the philosophical matter of whether we have indeed free will or if the course of our lives is already predetermined and it is unchangeable. Although Oedipus had heard prophecies about what he would do and tried to avoid it, it ended up happening anyway.
I was also quite fascinated by the fact that Sophocles often recurs to Choirs to represent the whole population of the city, which transmitted a great sense of collectively and joint strength.
There was also a lot of background story that I was not completely familiar with, and that I recommend checking out before reading the play.
