This book is a meditation on faith, family, small town life, violence, love, connection, and the nature of truth. At times I think it takes itself too seriously. I think the choice to have a 13-year-old boy narrate is interesting one. At times it's hard to take the narrator at face value, because I've never heard a 13-year-old boy use so many similes. At other times the immaturity of the narrator lends a certain emotionality to the storytelling, so it's a mixed success.
I did correctly guess the twists that were coming, so either they weren't that well hidden or I'm a genius 😂
