Blood Magic by Tessa Gratton

4.0

Graveyards, romance and blood what is not to love in Tessa Gratton’s Blood Magic?

Tessa Gratton did a fantastic job with the atmosphere of Blood Magic, it was dark, mysterious, and gothic even though it was set in modern day. It was the kind of setting you could fully immerse yourself in, and wouldn’t want to ever leave, if it weren’t so creepy at times, I would say it was delicious. Blood Magic isn’t quite like anything I have read before; it was dark, mysterious, with a twisted magic, and romance that made me want to read more! Tessa Gratton did a great job of weaving the mystery into Blood Magic, switching between the journal and the characters, as it pieced together.

In Blood Magic the narration switched easily between Nick and Silla’s narration, and both of them had a clear and distinctive voice. Nick and Silla both had difficult pasts, Nick’s mom was insane and hadn’t been seen and years, and Silla’s parents were brutally murdered the summer before. Their difficult pasts made their love even sweeter as they helped each other through the difficult things in life and they understood each other on a level their peers couldn’t. I would have liked to learn more about Nick’s mother, because while there were snippets of memories of her throughout Blood Magic, I felt she had played a bigger role in Nick’s life than was ever fully delved into.

I knew that Blood Magic was well written from chapter 1 when I cringed as Sill pressed the blade into her thumb to release her blood. I really enjoyed the climax of Blood Magic, I never knew what was coming next! But I was a little confused during the climax about what was happening, both in the action and with the magic. I adored Blood Magic with its mix of dark atmosphere and magic, and will definitely read whatever Tessa Gratton comes out with next!
