Girl, Goddess, Queen by Bea Fitzgerald

5.0

For those who adore Hades and Persephone, Girl, Goddess, Queen is the perfect book. It expertly incorporates characters and themes from Greek mythology into a fantasy story with rom-com themes. This book is the feminist retelling we have all been waiting for, and it tackles so much in such a diverse way. Bea Fitzgerald's retelling of the fable of Hades and Persephone is nothing short of magnificent. It's a really original interpretation of their tale, in which Persephone instead jumps to hell to create a different destiny for herself in order to elude Demeter and Zeus' wedding arrangements. Persephone's journey from little girl to chaos bringer was masterfully narrated, and it shows how she truly comes into her own. The main character, Persephone, is such a badass. I adored how she was portrayed in this as a passionate, driven, and a little power-hungry female. And how she wanted to be the one to shape her own destiny instead of having both of her parents establish it for her. And for the first time (that I've read), we get a softer portrayal of Hades, who I just loved. Viewed through the lens of two lost people rescuing one another, the romance between Hades and Persephone is breathtakingly beautiful. I just couldn't help but fall in love with them! They had me kicking my feet in the air and giggling into the book. I'm eager to see what Bea Fitzgerald, with her extensive knowledge of Greek mythology, comes up with next.
