The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

5.0

The Unhoneymooners, when you take your twin sister’s identity to spend a fake honeymoon with your nemesis.

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren is the heartthrob of romance books, the story of two identical twins Olive and Ami whose similarities end up at looks level, when their luck and life are in total opposition.

While Ami is the lucky one from a -to be married – and her accomplished life and Olive’s repetitive unlucky misfortunes and unemployment . Everything takes a drastic turn when everyone at Ami’s wedding gets food poisoned and Olive is the lucky one! She and Ethan, Ami’s brother in law ,also known as Olive’s nemesis are safe from the food poisoning. Now, in the same plane to Hawaii for the sick newly weds’s non-refundable honeymoon. Romance blooms! But the trip back home uncovers some secrets her brother in law certainly wanted them to be kept hidden.

It’s clear from the synopsis that this novel is a loud rom-com with an enemies to lovers trope, and it’s so charming I had to consume this in one night! it was not all flowers and champagne flutes, for it subtly reflected on topics as cheating, luck in life, communication, anger issues and body positivity.

The way Olive narrated her journey was funny and humours that it cracked me up in every turn and sentence, especially the way she perceived Ethan, her infatuation with him at first was quite apparent yet she denied it herself for many reasons such as “When someone doesn’t like us, it’s natural to not like them in return, right?” .

The romance was blooming throughout the “fake” honeymoon which introduced me to the character of Ethan more deeply, it cast a clarifying light on his subtle way of charming Olive and his inability to hide his long harbored feelings towards her.

Even though, The unhoneymooners is a chick-lit romance the novel communicates some real life matters such as the challenges of relationships and the fragility of love “love is exhausting.”

One of my favorite quotes is Olive saying:

“I can appreciate my body in a bikini and still want to set fire to the patriarchy.”

― Christina Lauren, The Unhoneymooners

I think we need more novels that distinguish between having a valid opinion on the effects of the patriarchy regarding women and their freedom of choice when it comes to their own body, women can still be beautiful and fight society’s gender norms.

Luck plays an important aspect in the life of Olive, at the beginning we find her convinced about her predestined bad luck, she slowly breaks free and embraces her power of choice. which was so satisfying to pursue and read.

I found it so charming to be immersed in a story such as The Unhoneymooners, it was witty, consuming and very entertaining. It’s a must read for romance lovers this summer.
