Smoke by Joe Ide
4.0
3.5*, I think.
Ide is very good at writing compelling characters. So good, in fact, that he seems to now have too many he wants to spend time with. I really like them all, but this novel isn't as cohesive as his others - that being said, they've all been a little less focused as the cast grows. There's less of a "new Sherlock Holmes" feel to Isaiah (which they leaned on heavily in the publicity, etc.) - instead, he just feels smarter than most people. Which is a shame, because IQ had some great bits of deduction, etc.
I still really like the series, and Ide's writing and characters, but I think I need to adjust the way I think about this as a series: it's more a single story, told over a few books, which happen to have short side-quests/mysteries.
I'll write a fuller review on CR in the next couple of days.
