At times I wondered if she thought of herself as two people: the one that moved through the world, and the one that created that other apparent self.

I loved the multiple POVs throughout this book. There were some unexpected characters narrating the story throughout the book, but it all came together and added so much more depth to the story. The book was extremely well-written, and I thoroughly enjoyed the science that was incorporated into the story (I have to imagine that quite a bit a research went into this particular aspect alone).

I no longer wanted to be from anywhere. My desire for roots had been more than a desire for belonging. I had seen what people who were from places were like, how they glittered with solidity and substance, and I had wanted to be filled with that substance too. Now I was afraid.

The characters in this book were quite complex, but also relatable in some ways. While Su Lan's character reminded me of a puzzle missing a few pieces (and therefore never to be fully solved/understood), her daughter Liya is the one that must contend with and come to terms with the fact that she may never truly know the person that her mother was, or even who her father is. Overall I enjoyed the book, but I wasn't a huge fan of the ending.
