This book really leans into social commentary, and has a hard magic system that really doesn’t feel like a hard magic system. What I mean by that is has a visual associated with something somewhat scientific, but is not expanded upon, nor is it built upon science. Although, the magic system had interesting and important costs and limitations.
Some of the side characters did things that felt not foreshadowed, (in character if you think about it, but it’s off page.)
Thomil and Carra were great characters, and I love their familial relationship. Sciona was also an amazing character who undergoes a huge change over the course of the story. Her relationship with Thomil felt like it was a natural progression over time.
I think this book really talked about immigration issues and indigenous history, through the social commentary in the small details.
