Recovery: Freedom from Our Addictions
by Russell Brand
Russell provides an honest look into his own world of recovery from drug addiction and egotism, while guiding us effectively through the 12 Step Program. As per Brand's style, the book is heavily peppered with mystical explorations of spirituality, the importance of love, and an interrogation of what it truly means to be alive. While humourous and thorough, Brand too often indulges in long-winded anecdotes that initially seem relevant, but ultimately seem more like filler towards the end. However, they certainly remove any presence of 'holier than thou' that Brand could be accused of trying to manufacture, as they are often embarrassing tales and drive home the notion of the twelve step - growth never ceases.
This is perhaps the self-help book that requires the most commitment from it's reader if they want to make a change. Opened my eyes to the logic and beauty of the Steps. If I ever find myself truly lost, this book will have shed any hesitations I held about the efficacy of the program.
