Over the whole series, I think the romance between Keegan and Breen is underdeveloped.

Breen’s character development seems to not stall, but sort of slow down/become repetitive after the first book.

The dragons feel underutilized as a whole — sort of like “oh I want to use dragons in my story because they’re cool” but then the relationship between dragons and riders exists solely as a plot device, and feels like an afterthought.

Odran feels underutilized, too. He never feels like a big threat; it’s more telling than showing until the last book, and even then it feels way too easy to defeat him after the build up of “oh he’s so dangerous, he wants to destroy worlds.”

Finally, the climax into the conclusion feels abrupt. All the storylines are neatly concluded, but I wanted more time for the characters to deal with the aftermath. Despite being told the consequences are dire and the losses weigh heavy on the characters, I simply didn’t feel it.

I guess overall my feelings are, interesting story, I was obsessed with these books for a week while I made my way through them, but much less development and explorations of the themes and ideas used in this series than I would have liked.
