Sons and Lovers
by D. H. Lawrence
Ugh, possibly one of the most dislikable books I have read. I'm sad that it was the first D.H. Lawrence I read, b/c I am not inclined to read any more by him. While the first 2 chapters of the book I found gripping and interesting, centered on a woman in a loveless, abusive marriage and discussing the daily life of her and her mining family, once the protagonist switched to Paul, the book became a slog through repetitive language, long-winded events, and a journey into what others have pointed out is a quite misogynistic view of the relationships Paul has. I found him insipid, and while I think there is some commentary on the damaging relationship with his mother, I'm never quite sure if D.H. Lawrence wants us to dislike Paul as intensely as I did. Paul is so intensely changeable and violent towards those around him, and he only seems to feel things boiling intensely in his blood. Miriam and Clara could both be very interesting characters, as representative of intellectual and physical dichotomies, however Lawrence also seems to hate them, and resent and/or disregard their individuality outside of their relationship with Paul.
Anyway, after a promising beginning, for me, this book was only worth the feeling of accomplishment for the determination it took to finish it (and some of the scenes of nature were very beautiful).
