The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

5.0

The beginning of the book was a bit confusing to me, it was fast paced with many short chapters, that are all reasonable short (i guess) so the story can move to the Hawthorne plot quicker. It wasn't bad but I simply wasn't used to three-pages long chapters, which threw me a bit off at the beginning and even though it's fast paced it took me some time, to really get invested into the story. Like so many stories, this too seems to pick up after a 100 or 150 pages and after that I couldn't stop reading anymore. All these clues and questions Barnes frequently throws at us were more than intriguing to keep me going, plus I also didn't have to wait too long until Avery could go back from her daily-life-/heiress-duty to solving riddles.

It's a fun and quick read, and I need to read book 2 asap. I mean - who doesn't want to see the rich getting eating? :)

Spoilerbut damn, the power Emily held on everyone, despite her being dead? I feel sorry for Rebecca, who problably could never explore life the way she wanted too and despite all the "Emily this" and "Emily would have wanted that" talk, it just seems that she wasn't such a nice person to be around ... or to know.
