Axel
by Harper Sloan
Well, I will be honest and just say it: I really didn’t expect the book to be that good. I guess I just thought that this would be yet another story about though strong hero type of guy who “got in” and save the day. And then I read few first chapters and I was mentally blown away. Really!!! Not because I haven’t read similar plot in other books, it was the way how it was described. I really got the feeling that I was in the mind of Isabelle West, and it was not nice. Not in the least. And that is the main reason why I found this book – good.
For me good writer is one who can, with its writing, put you in the character, or in the particular scene. And during reading this book I did get transferred couple of times in Izzy’s skin. I could hear her thoughts like they were my own, I could feel her pain, and I could understand where she is coming from (mentally)…
Butttttt (yep, there is “big but” ;)) – the writing and the job of transferring reader in character’s mind was done in such a good way that, on the other hand, more than couple of times during reading I was seriously pist of at Izzy. As pist of in a way that Izzy character started to get on my nerves that I wanna to bitch slap her. Hard. And, also, to yell. And maybe to send her to AA meetings...
Axel, kinda, didn’t get my green light as a positive (good) character until second part of the book. Yeah, he is smoking hot, he is ex-military, Special Forces or whatever, and he has all that dark and dangerous charisma around himself, but my first thought was “what a pompous ass”. I get that he was in “the dark” (like Izzy) about what did really happen, but give me (or woman – meanin’ Izzy) a break. The dude hasn’t seen “the love of his life” for years and the first thing she does seeing him – faints – and he still acts as Neanderthal making scene and demanding who knows what. At that point I was seriously in the mood to knock him down. Especially, as the rest of supporting characters, who are mostly badass alpha males (part of Axel security team) have been described as a perfect and sweet guys (Greg!!!) and dark and mysterious (Maddox!!!). And lucky for him that in second part of the book he did a major 180 turn.
Anyway, the main reason why I was in the good mood after reading Axel because this is one of those “a second chance love story” which are one of my favorites. Or “love conquers all”, or “it’s never too late for true love”... And I will not forget to mention smoking hot descriptions of sex scenes. Correction. Smoking hot Axel’s “pillow talk” while having smoking hot sex (those did me some serious turn on ;)).
But, the main reason why I’m giving four stars for Axel is because this is Sloan’s DEBUT novel. And it is unbelievable good. Lookin’ forward for next ones in the series. And there will be many next ones giving the descriptions of Axel’s colleagues of arms which have been perfectly introduced in this book.
