Comet in Moominland by Tove Jansson

5.0

Updating my review, because I was in a much more fitting headspace this time around.

I can't quite put my finger on what it is exactly that gives this book such a unique feeling, and why it is so comforting for me. It's an emotion that isn't easily described with a word. There is a constant feeling of dread, because the comet is coming, and this dread seeps into everything - but there is also adventure and beauty, and those two forces combine to make for a read that is genuine, authentic and hopeful. We're not pretending that everything is easily solved and that there are no problems. And neither are we pretending like we aren't scared. In Comet in Moominland, you watch the world die without any way to oppose it, enjoying the present but dreading tomorrow. And yet, it leaves me with a feeling that the future isn't as bleak after all.
