This is easily a new favourite for me! I absolutely adore Teo and came to love the whole gang of competitors in the Sunbearer Trials.

This book follows Jade demigod Teo, who is unexpectedly chosen to compete among many Gold demigods in the traditional competition of the Sunbearer Trials, which is held every 10 years and ensures the continuity of their world. The last time a Jade was chosen to compete having been 130 years ago, Teo’s selection comes as a shock to members of all kingdoms in Reino del Sol. Will Teo be up to the challenge of fighting against the Golds, or will he fail, becoming the sacrifice at the end of the trials?

This book is chock-full of social commentary, heartwarming moments, wisdom and joy. It gave me happy tears and goosebumps.

But it is also filled with suspense, with the demigods battling for the title of Sunbearer. I couldn’t put the book down, and when I did, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

This is an ode to the underdog; a book about justice and doing the right thing; a commentary on hierarchies, marginalization and systems of power, on the effects and power of greed. It’s a book about being true to yourself. And I absolutely cannot wait for the sequel.
