Million Dollar Demon by Kim Harrison

3.75

This is the second book I’ve read in the Hollows series, after starting with the book #1. And, um, apparently there’s a lot i missed, LOL. Rachel is apparently a demon now or something? There are events alluded to that I’m assuming occurred in previous novels but, for the most part, I was consistently lost in trying to follow what was going on in this book and why. So, yeah, I would say this probably isn’t one of those series where you can just read any particular book as a stand-alone story.

There was also something a little off in the justification for this story. It gave me big “coming out of retirement” vibes, like Rachel’s character arc had already been completed and this book was just tacked on to keep the story going.

All of that being said, Kim Harrison’s superb writing (and Marguerite Gavin’s captivating narration) kept me interested enough in the story to read through to the finish. The characters introduced in this novel (that weren’t in the first one at least) really grew on me and I actually almost teared up when one of them died. And the action sequences (however rare, most of this is dialogue and scene setting) were exciting. Even if I didn’t quite understand the magic rules being used, I still felt transported into the story. And that says something.
