This story had some top tier queer/sapphic yearning in it. It really showcased the erotic side of vampires and forbidden sexuality really well, especially coming from Carmilla, rather than the narrator herself. There were definitely a few drawbacks, like the convenance of the General telling his story and the question as to who the people travelling with Carmilla were, but overall it was an enjoyable read. I also appreciated reading one of the original vampire works that sparked basically the entire vampire tradition. There was definitely a lot of inspiration given to the first half of the book Thirst by Marina Yuszczuk, and if anyone is looking for a modern story like Carmilla I would recommend that work.
