ottersandurchins 's review for:
Vinegar Girl
by Anne Tyler
This was a quick listen (less than 6hours) and I was looking forward to a clever retelling of Taming of the Shrew. What I got was a shallow and unsatisfying story, that could easily have been fleshed out to a full and enjoyable tale, but instead uses quite objectionable racial stereotyping as well as misogynistic plot points from the original play (Shakespeare wrote it when social norms were 'slightly' different!!) to move the story along.
Kate was just plain annoying, with no explanation as to her nature - I wouldn't have married her. If the author had spent some more time expanding on the character of the protagonists, their background, their motivations, then I would have enjoyed the non-love love story a lot more.
Equally, why did the arranged marriage have to be to a comical East European sterotype? Basing Kate's objections on things like his inability to say 'Th' and his unwillingness to use articles in speech was a bit grating.
There were moments in the book where i could see its potential - but these were often unfulfilled. Such a shame.
I've given this 3 stars despite my annoyances, as it was a fine listen, passed the time and filled a prompt on my Book Democracy Book Club bingo this month.
