Small Great Things
by Jodi Picoult
I’m adding the spoiler alert because I’m talking about the ending. Sometimes Jodi Picoult takes on issues I don’t even want to listen to or read about so i usually take my time between her books. For some reason I thought that this was a newer book for her, maybe because the white supremacy movement is so prevalent in the news lately. But, sadly, it’s 8 years since she felt drawn to this story. And it’s still ever so relevant. Is it ironic or appropriate that I finished on the night before MLK day and the day a new administration is sworn in to the US? One which is proudly supported by groups like those which Turk ran in? I saw myself in Kennedy, felt Ruth’s pain, and was just ‘this’ much disappointed to see Turk come to terms with his past and behaviors and put it behind him. This much. Because I wanted to see him punished. Was the loss of the infant punishment enough for me? Apparently not. Does my race come into play with those feelings? Probably. I’ll pick another one of her relevant books up after a while.
