We the Animals by Justin Torres
4.0
An odd, hauntingly intoxicating book. Took me awhile to realize the reason behind mine feeling a bit
too disheartened had what these kids have been going through expressed through the author's breathtaking and beautiful craftsmanship. Time, age and words seem to mingle into themselves without any trace of strokes, mixing and forwarding themselves into the future.
I feel so sad at them being discarded. Discarded when they needed the adult figures the most. Reflections of a parent's unconscious act causing a ripple into the lives of these three kids is so sad and helpless. Which makes me think, aren't we already too privileged to have already born to two sound, "morally" right person one of whom already selflessly deciding to invest her all eternity into nurturing her offspring?
I detested the parents in the book. I did not like them all. She let them go hungry into the night. He was gone far too long leaving his son in the museum. The disgusting display of the truth is the beauty of the book. It lays bare the nakedness of humans caught in tragic events of fate and situations. Now I know why I had been oddly feeling disappointed lately. This has been a good book.
