“You make me want to live, Rowan. Not survive; not exist. Live.”
“Let’s go rattle the stars.”
“To whatever end.”
The characters develop a lot in this book. Some old players resurfaced and kicked ass, which I absolutely adored. And some revenge was taken that was oh, so satisfying. Aelin is really coming into her own which is fun to read about. I'm genuinely loving getting to know more badass female characters after dealing with nothing but Dorian, Chaol and Rowan for the last three books. (And this one added in Aedion). This might be an unpopular opinion but I genuinely enjoyed Manon's chapters. I'm intrigued to see what role her character continues to play as we get into the last three (very chunky) books. Along with Manon, we got to see more Elide, Lysandra and Kaltain. Like I said, I was super excited to see more badass women on the page!
The action scenes were really awesome. The entire book felt really reminiscent of Heir of Fire in pacing. The first half was a bit slow with more politics and intrigue while the second half was super action-packed with fight scenes that had my heart in my throat. The Valg are terrifying and I can't wait to see how SJM ups the stakes in the next few books. It feels like every book is just heart-pounding action in the last half/third. How can she sustain this level of stakes for three more books?! I need to know!
I wish there was more representation literally in any way (race, LGBTQ+, disability etc) but overall, I'm really enjoying these books. They're a fun, escapist fantasy that definitely holds my attention. I can't wait to continue reading.
