i’ll never not appreciate any form of storytelling that commits to the consequences of characters’ actions and blood over bright haven does that in spades.
at about 40%, when sciona experiences her mental break and is standing on the ledge, and the subsequent 30% of the book after, i thought that there would be no way this story ended in any other way but her death, probably at her own hands. because how do you live knowing what she knows? then there’s the moment where thomil thinks of the future and of family, one with sciona included and i deluded myself into thinking that perhaps the ending i had envisioned would not be the one we would get. so here i am, the end of this book so happy that m. l. wang committed to the story and crying because by the end, i was rooting for sciona’s survival for thomil. the line where he says to carra that they love and lose and lose. i wanted to curl up and sob. but the ending was so fitting for sciona’s character that i genuinely cannot imagine another one.
