Role Playing by Cathy Yardley

3.0

I love that this romance features an older FMC and MMC. One of the reasons I have been reading less romance lately is that as a Gen Xer, it's sometimes harder to connect with the preoccupations, concerns, and situational contexts of younger characters. A well-written book is a well-written book, of course, and I'll never let the protagonists' age prevent me from enjoying a good story; but, it's nice to see people at the start of a new romantic journey a little later in life.

Role Playing has significant representation across several planes (demi/bisexuality, mental health/social anxiety, for example) which is also refreshing, though this type of inclusion is increasingly found in many books in the genre.

I was initially concerned about the enmeshed relationship between the FMC and her son, but that was satisfactorily addressed by the conclusion. I was also bummed out that the 50-year-old MMC seemed to be a doormat at the beginning of the story, but his character arc gives him significant opportunities for growth. Overall, very satisfying.
