If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

5.0

“Do you blame Shakespeare for any of it?”
“I blame him for all of it.”

And I blame Richard for all of it.
Have you ever known that a book would be one of your new favorites before even starting the book? That happened to me with this book. I have completely fallen in love with the dark academia genre and I really wish there were more books like this. So I have seen If we were villains on my fyp on tik tok many times and each time I was like okay I’m going to read that soon. But you know how it is when you have a never ending tbr. Actually I think I would have waited even longer to read this book if it wasn’t because I read Vicious (my fav book of all time) a few months ago, because it made me want to read dark academia even more.
The funny thing is, I ordered this book without even knowing what it was about (normally I would never do that) but there’s was just something about the vibe that made me sure I would like it, then I read the synopsis for it and I got even more excited.

I finished reading this book in two days which is personally for me, really quick. I really tried to stop reading so I could enjoy it more, but it was just impossible.
Even though I only just finished this book yesterday, I know this is going to be a book that I’m going to think about years from now on. I mean it has been months since I read Vicious but I still think about it on a daily basis. Because this book really made me think.

If we were villains is a book I think everyone should read, but only a few people will actually get it. Like really get it. I think it’s hard to say what exactly that made me love this book so much, and some people will just never get it. And honestly I’m just sorry for those people who didn’t like this book or thought it was just “okay” cause that means that they didn’t “get it” the same way I did. But again everyone is different and has different taste and opinions and that’s okay!
But anyway this book made me feel all kinds of emotions, and I think one of the many reasons I loved this book so much, is because it revolves around the themes friendship, love and obsession which was exactly what I was looking for.
This book made me think, it made me laugh, it made me angry, it made me cry, and the ending made me actually sob (which I never do over books, like it’s very rare that I cry over a book, but sobbing?) and it made me shocked so that I wanted to throw my book across the room and scream at it while crying.

There’s no doubt that the best part of this book was the characters.
Oliver Marks was the perfect narrator for this book, and I will say that I am an Oliver Marks defender till the day I die! I loved his character so much from the very beginning. One thing I found interesting about him was that he’s not the typical protagonist. Because he’s not a hero, not even a villain. His whole life he has been a sidekick. I loved the way his character evolved through the story. Even though it sounds a bit weird I think one of the reasons I love him so much is because on a level I kinda relate to him.

Along with Oliver, James was my favorite character. He seemed like such a kind and helpful person. I felt so incredibly bad for him at the end
