Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke

I have so many thoughts pertaining to this short story. Many of them are good but I think the overall thought that is the loudest is “What the hell did I just read?”

Simply put, this book is good and very entertaining. At no point did I expect what was happening to happen (in a good way). Once you start this story it’ll be hard to pull your attention away from it. It reminded me of ‘The Twilight Zone’ in the way that it throws you into the middle of a crazy story and doesn’t coddle you as the story gets progressively weirder. When it ends, it ends and you’re left sitting there with a dumb look on your face and an open book in your hands.

‘Sour Candy’ is strange, creepy, and above all else engrossing. Despite how disturbing it is there wasn’t one point where I wanted to put the book down. My only grip with this book was the very end. I still don’t think I know what really happened at the end there after sitting with it for a few days. It’s all slow-paced and builds tension until the very end when everything happens all at once.

Anyways, it’s a fascinating story that if you think you can stomach it, you should read it.
