oh wow the ending of this book was just brilliant. i really love dark(?) academia books like this that are built on so much research (i just love when fiction has a bibliography) (#litreview). i’m also really into magical realism rn (which i learned was a phrase at barnes and noble) so this was perfect. sometimes i think her goal to make this read like an academic work came at the sacrifice of truly developing complex characters and sometimes the narration just read weird (there was a lot of telling and not a lot of showing) and the plot dragged on a bit but im willing to mostly overlook these flaws because i did shed several tears during the last quarter of the book. honestly tho i love when authors aren’t afraid to make hard choices when writing and boy did she make some hard choices when writing this one.
