One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
This book makes me very grateful for my life. Despite being a very easy read, it's deeply subtle and there are hints here and there about the deterioration of the human conditions and the desolate life associated with it. However, it does have an overall cheery tone (as much as a Russian story can) with a very stoic theme especially with the protagonist.
It's a good book to read if you want to understand the sufferings of communism and Gulags. It doesn't have much build up and you get into the narrative very quickly.
