In the acknowledgement Sager says one of his editors called this book "positively Hitchcockian" and I have to say I agree. The final parts of the third act had my jaw on the floor, a truly disturbing turn of events that, while in hindsight are obvious, I truly didn't see coming. I went from thinking this was another supernatural tale from Sager, in the vein of Rosemary's Baby, to the harsh reality of...THAT...I was floored.
Only reason it's 4 and not 5 stars is because, and I don't know if this is just something that happens when you read a lot from the same author, but Jules as the main character felt weaker compared to other Sager heroines. I like her a lot, don't get me wrong, I was rooting for her from the jump...but she felt flat and a bit too similar in tone to some of his other MC's.
