The Wicked King by Holly Black

Okay...where to begin? (slightly spoilery)

First let me say that I enjoyed TWK more than TCP for several reasons. One of these being that Jude's new role as advisor means we see more schemes and politics and I love seeing my baby plot peoples deaths. Second, I grew to love the fact that the side characters received some limelight and were no longer backdrops. Third, Cardan and Jude's chemistry was...just wow. I had to close the book and give myself a few minutes of fangirling...very embarrassingly.

This passage is particularly entertaining:

“Tell me again what you said at the revel,” he says, climbing over me, his body against mine.
“What?” I can barely think.
“That you hate me,” he says, his voice hoarse. “Tell me that you hate me.”
“I hate you,” I say, the words coming out like a caress. I say it again, over and over. A litany. An enchantment. A ward against what I really feel. “I hate you. I hate you. I hate you.”
He kisses me harder.

I was so upset at the betrayals, yes plural, although I'm going to refrain from naming the traitors. And despite my baby being the Queen of Nothing, im excited to start the final installment and see where the politics of Elfhame & Undersea takes us. I'm also very interested in Madoc's next moves, Grimsen's strategy and my baby Jude's new plan.

This series is so refreshing to read since Jude is power-driven and has so many nuances to her character. She cares very deeply for those she loves and would kill for them. She's also very motivated as the High King's sensechal and is constantly cooking up new plans. Shes also driven to be as physically strong and able as possible and yet is honest about her shortcomings. One scene that happens in the middle of the book is an ambush on her way to Madoc's manor and because shes hurt and alone, she goes with a plan that isnt reckless. I could write soooooo much on how Jude is one of a kind, well-written, strong, kind and ambitious character but I'll come to a stop here.

Needless to say, I need Queen of Nothing NOW.
