I feel like this book suffered from its own hype. As someone who has read some really dark sh*t, this book didn't really live up to my expectations and given the high ratings and multiple recommendations about this book I was expecting a lot more than I got. But that's on me, and it's not really Kent's fault that her story didn't live up to what I'd imagined in my head.

I have not read the other books in the Legacy of Gods series, and honestly while this story is supposed to work as a stand alone I don't really believe it does. There are few introductions to the characters Kent assumes the reader is already familiar with and when there is some background provided it feels really like its being done as rote, rather than woven into the story as part of this books narrative.

When it comes to our MC's, I felt like the biggest flaw in the way their dynamic was written was the extent of the on again/off again vibe. I'm not into that because all that tells me is that the author fast burned an intended slow burn. There was too much back and forth, and each one of the characters stepped away and pulled back in turn and it honestly got to the point where I was pretty frustrated with how ridiculous these two were being. The only reason this got a three-star from me and not lower is because even though the plot execution suffered, the writing was actually decent and the flow of the narrative worked for me. The end of the book was, I believe, designed to be truly shocking but it just wasn't (again, I think this was a me problem, not an author problem because it takes a lot to get me to gasp at dark content).

In general I'm not sure this one is worthy of the recs. I also read this immediately following "Like You Hate Me" by Bethany Winters and I think in comparison, God of Fury was the less well done of the two so it also suffered from immediate comparison to a book that is still living in my head rent free.
