There's a big part of the mystery that involves sexual assault/ rape and spiking women's drinks, which is why I tagged drug abuse. There's also a big plot point about an adult/minor relationship but they don't describe it much, which involves statutory rape. Before the book one of the character's parents dies of cancer.
