On the Come Up
by Angie Thomas
“You recognize when you say brilliant that you’re also saying Bri”
“On the come up” by Angie Thomas is the author’s second book that takes place in the same city as the bestselling “The Hate U Give”.
“On the come up” follows strong Bri, a 16 year old that wants to become a rapper and when she gets the chance to rap at The Ring her dream is so close that she almost can touch it.
This book takes up the fault in all the stereotypes that exists when it comes to black and brown people, how they’re treated differently because of the color of their skin. It also takes up important topics like drug addiction, alcoholism, depression and other mental illnesses.
Bri is a hotheaded girl who says what she thinks, and I love her for it. She knows what her dream is and is at the beginning ready to do whatever to reach it. But she grows so much during the much and I really liked getting to know the real Bri more and more as I flipped page after page.
Thomas is a really good author who has a way with words that makes it hard for the reader to put the book down.
I really enjoyed getting to know the characters in this book, they all had their own strong personalities which made it easy to tell them apart. My favorites were without any doubt Bri, Trey, Sonny & Curtis! Ah Curtis.
⭐️ “On the come up” by Angie Thomas gets 3.5/5 stars from me!
