by Octavia E. Butler
I was awed by Dawn, and then slightly let down by Adulthood Rites, but this closing part was as amazing as Dawn. What an extraordinary story, what a development for the Oankali-Human-construct society, the emergence of construct ooloi. Again I was surprised at how real this story felt, and I think it's simply because Butler is so in charge of what she writes. She understands humans so well it doesn't seem difficult for her to imagine what would happen in these alien-human relationships, and what the effect of Jodahs's human characteristics would be on its ooloi-ness. These are very sensual stories--one would wish to feel what these people feel when they are connected to each other via an ooloi, what that intimacy would be like.
Simply extraordinary, I have no other word that suits better.
