Cursed
by Karol Ruth Silverstein
This engaging and hope-filled story about the prickly Ricky gets a lot right: it’s one of the most authentic voices of a teen with disabilities that I’ve read. Ricky’s irreverent voice is delightful.
The author’s endnotes sum things up:
Cursed is for those kids and others living with chronic illnesses and/ or disabilities— as well as anyone who wants to better understand what it’s like to live with chronic pain.
And how can you NOT like a book in which one of the sources cited is the Hypoalgesic Effects of Swearing?
My one quibble is the big ribbon tied around the various end pieces. Ricky’s transition from surly and misunderstood loner to well-adjusted and wiser 15-year-old over a roughly six month period doesn’t always ring true.
