A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

3.5 / 5 stars.

The series is slowly growing on my, but I don't know if I am just giving up on looking further into the story and just taking it all face value at this point.

I enjoyed this book, more compared to the first novel. However there were a few things which I have issues with and they were mainly Feyre's relationship with the other characters.

Feyre + Tamlin:
Not at all explored. Tamlin keeps her house bound, Feyre wants to be a free bird and they are getting married!? Why are they moving so fast!?
She tells Tamlin she wants to be free, but Tamlin doesn't want anyone to take her away from her again bah bah bah. That's where the interaction ends, I waited until the end of the book, looking forward to a conversation between Fey and Tam - he tells her why he locked her up, a confession of what he wants, why he did nothing to try and save her while she was participating in those trials ect. But you get nothing and it's sad to see a potential villain to fall flat and have not substance.

Feyre + Rhys:
Their flirtatious conversations were the best. I cheered for them. But OMG when it comes to the most serious conversations I wanted to bang my head against a brick wall. Rhys multiple times confesses his most inner emotions to Feyre. What does she do? She makes it about her, as if she is the tragic hero and starts fighting with Rhys on who has it the worst. My girl, Rhys is like 1000+ years old or something. He has been around for centuries!!

Feyre is the dumbest character ever written in the series. The members of the Night court (Mor, Azriel, Cassian and Amren) have more personality, love and depth to them compared to the main character. I would rather read a book regarding these four, including Rhys, that Feyre.
Granted Feyre is 20, she acts 16. I don't think this was the correct age for the character - it's a little weird for a 1000 year old being to fall for a 20 year old. IDK it just doesn't seem right. But age gap aside, Feyre doesn't seem to think very much. Despite 'going through a lot' you would think this individual would be more caution when dealing with others or situations. I feel her actions are just made to have the plot move along.

The world building is more interesting than the main character. I think the book doesn't need the villainous king who wants to create chaos. I think the series would be just fine with court politics or just Tamlin being the end-game-villain.

and don't get me started on Feyre's sisters becoming Fae or that Lucien mate is one of Feyre's sisters. Not a fan. It's giving a piece of cake for everyone to eat. like a "and everyone lives happily ever after". There isn't any danger, or stakes in this world. Despite being told many times how dangerous and unpredictable the world is. I think it would be more interesting if Feyre's sisters either remained human (explore the human and fae relationship and hardships) or died using that cauldron moment. Make us want to fear for the characters lives.

Will I continue reading this series... Yes, as I am more invested in the side characters.
