It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

emotional hopeful sad medium-paced

4.0

I worried at first that this book would turn out to be another standard romance novel. It has all the hallmarks. The lead male is rich and hot. The lead female is hot and struggling to find her footing in life. It's cliche but fortunately well-written enough to keep you going.

The story takes a turn into less explored territory when abuse enters the plot. The reader gets a front row seat to the inner thoughts of an abused woman and the reasons why she chooses to stay.

The writing was solid and the story keeps you interested. On the topic of abuse, it seemed a bit soft. At the end of the book, Hoover explains that she didn't intend it to look like any specific experience. That said, the ending represents more of an ideal that many abuse victims would like to experience rather than the harsh reality many face. The hard truth is that abusers rarely recognize or admit their abuse.

It is definitely worth reading and will keep you interested to the end, though it could be more original.
