This book was described to me as a political thriller with a lot of sexual assault. As such I avoided it for quite awhile. The political piece is really only the last 100 pages and the sexual assault pieces are of course horrific but fairly brief descriptions. The heart and humanity of this book was a pleasant surprise. It reads more like a series of vignettes containing a cast than a novel per se and I'm okay with that. So glad I finally read this.
