The Joy Luck Club
by Amy Tan
I’ve read this book many times in my life. The first time was when my mom gave it to me as a teenager because she said I didn’t understand her. I read it again on my own multiple times. I’ve read it in classes as both a student and the teacher. Each time, I feel like I’ve “gotten” it, that I understand more about myself and my ma. Most recently, I read the book with my mom while she was in the hospital before she passed. Those were some of her most active days, squeezing my hand at parts that reminded her of us or her mom. I don’t think I could have picked a better last book to read to the woman who started my love of reading.
