The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore
3.0

This is a historical fiction story about the “Current Wars” between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse. It also heavily involved other notable historical figures to include Nikola Tesla, Paul Cravath, Alexander Graham Bell, and J. P. Morgan. Paul Cravath, recently graduated, untested lawyer, somehow lands the case of Westinghouse v. Edison. Mr. Cravath represents Mr. Westinghouse in the more than 300 lawsuits between the two inventors about the lightbulb (and other electrical matters). We follow along as he navigates the complexities of such a huge case and learns more about practicing law, electricity, and the motivations of brilliant men!
This was my choice for our book club, and I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as most of the other members. It reminded me, in parts, of the tedium of reading The Devil in The White City (the only Larson I’ve attempted as of yet). Overall, it’s an informative story about topics I’d never really considered too much but just didn’t hold my attention a ton. This may have partly had to do with the narrator of the audiobook, as was brought up by someone else in our book club meeting. However, I seem to be the minority in these feelings, so if you are interested in historical fiction, these famous men of our past, or how electricity and patents work, give this one a read!
