Holy smokes, this book! I've never read anything quite like this. It's solidly toeing the line between fantasy - Witches! Magic! - and horror - demons! Death! SO MUCH BODY HORROR! This, in case you did not know, is very much My Jam so I was all in just from the premise. Beyond that though, this book really shines with its characters. Narrator Frankie is a surly-on-the-surface mess of a twenty-something who is both frustrating and heart breaking in equal parts. Watching her struggling to be brave, and learning to trust her newborn found family was instantly relatable. The supporting cast is just as wonderful. Ben is sweet and protective, Cleo is aloof and poised and Jessamae is as alluring as she is unsettling, but past their surface traits all carry deep injuries from growing up with their magic. If you are looking for something very different to check your fantasy/horror boxes, you can't go wrong with this indy gem! I am so excited to read the sequel(s).
