Lone Women by Victor LaValle

LaValle is a singular talent, in that I honestly can't think of anyone else who could produce his trademark brew of horror, crime, and minutely detailed social commentary, and this may be his masterpiece to date. From the first chapter to the last, he throws more curveballs than Satchel Paige in a story that reads like a twisted Black rewrite of one of the later Little House on the Prairie books with ALLLLL the brakes taken off and the dread coming at you as inexorably as a steam engine across the plains.
