This Rebel Heart by Katherine Locke

5.0

This is the first book by the author that I've ever read, and I was hooked from the first page. It's set in post-WWII Budapest, but it's not strictly a historical novel. There's some magic-- so I guess I'd call it magical realism. I loved that. There are also some references to Jewish folklore, which were great.

One of the things that made this book impossible to put down is its characters. I immediately loved Csilla for her courage and her vulnerability. The only family member she has left is her aunt. The two of them sort of dance around the edges of their grief, but that felt so real and raw.

I think fans of historical fiction, especially readers who like magical realism will love this book. It's one of my favorite books that came out this year.
