Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky

4.0

In some ways extremely liberating, in many other ways extremely depressing. It is good to read such a precise, surgical examination of some of the most human thoughts a person has; the fear of other people's opinions, the haughty front put in place to pretend that you do not really care all that much, and the desperate thirst for praise from those you consider both your inferiors and unassailable gods. At the same time though, it has caused something of a crisis with how pointedly it draws out these traits in the text, shattering any kind of notion that your thoughts are in any way unique.

Would recommend to just about anyone. Some archaic language may be a barrier to some readers, but once you get hooked by it, its hard not to stop and reflect every few pages.
