Ever Cursed by Corey Ann Haydu

4.0

Overall, Ever Cursed is a fascinating book. The premise is simple--a young witch curses 5 princesses in order to exact revenge against their father the king. The idea of having to watch those you love suffer, which can be far more terrible than suffering yourself, is a recurring theme in this book. These curses are set into motion the second each princess turns 13, yet can be broken before the witch's 18th birthday.
This book is not a YA fantasy retelling of a fairy tale. Instead it is written very much like a "typical" children's fairy tale in which seemingly one-dimensional characters live in a seemingly simplistic world. However, into this story, the author confronts traumatic issues sexual assault, as well as tackling gender issues, poverty, war etc...in a world that is both racially, ethnically and sexually diverse. There is a lot to think about in this book, particularly how societal expectations can determine the ways in which individuals deal with serious problems. Definitely recommended!
