The Bayou by Arden Powell
4.0
Okayyyyy this was ????
In the best way.
I devoured The Bayou in one sitting. If you like Summer Sons (Lee Mandelo), this has very similar southern gothic vibes. Powell created a sweltering atmosphere that leant well to the mystery of the town, why its inhabitants were disappearing, and who was this beautiful, mysterious man that keeps popping up in our protagonist- Eugene’s life? There’s guns and swamp monsters, religious trauma, sex and violence, a whole hotpot of glorious angst that bubbles over with the rising of the bayou. I enjoyed this so much! And i’ll definitely be reading Powell’s other novellas.
