Lessons in Chemistry
by Bonnie Garmus
The main character in this novel, Elizabeth, struck me as a female Sheldon Cooper, an extremely brilliant woman with few social skills. She was striving for a career in chemistry in the days when working woman meant secretary or teacher or nurse. After reluctantly taking a job as a chef on an afternoon television show geared to homemakers, Elizabeth took great liberties in her role. She frequently went off-script and delivered her recipes and cooking instructions in scientific terms. She empowered her faithful audience to think outside the little box that was their home and kitchen. She encouraged women to reach for something more. Although she outraged some of her viewers and sponsors with her unflinching beliefs and opinions, she was embraced by so many others that her show went national and became syndicated.
This was a book that I had on my to-read list, took off, and put back on. I'm glad I did as I thoroughly enjoyed it.
