This is a quiet, humorous, hopeful book. Michael is a 42 year old teacher in Northern England, sad and lonely as his marriage is ending. He seeks solace in long walks through the English countryside. Marnie is divorced and also sad and alone by preference, holed up in her London apartment working at her copy editing freelance jobs. Their mutual friends arrange a walk through the English moors to the sea and both of them agree to go reluctantly. When the organizers leave the walk, Marnie and Michael continue together. They get to know each other gradually as the walks continue. Their banter is smart, literary, and funny. Watching their relationship unfold is a wonderful treat for the reader. The ending is excellent, open ended and thus not the typical romance novel ending but satisfyingly perfect for this novel. This book was displayed in every book shop we visited in the UK- glad to finally nab it from the library.
