River of Fire by Erin Hunter

3.0

River of Fire is odd. I really want to like it. The parts I like, I really, really like. Overall, the pacing is very odd. I've also read that there are several parts of this book that the editors supposedly changed against the writers' wishes: some warriors' names were supposed to be different, and there's a horrible inconsistency with one character, who is a kittypet in this book but was not in Tigerheart's Shadow, which takes place at the same time.

I like Violetshine and Twigpaw as characters. I wish they weren't both being rushed into romances so soon, but they are interesting characters on their own. I like Sparkpelt, and I like that she's a lot like her mother Squirrelflight used to be in her youth. I personally like to focus on character growth when I read these books, but in this one, it's kind of hard to see what any characters are doing because the plot is so all over the place.

As a fan, I'm getting concerned that we're five books into this six-book arc and I can't really tell what the point of the arc is yet. Alderheart is a main character, yet he's done nothing of severe significance after helping find SkyClan and bringing Twig/Violet to the Clans. Yeah, that was important, but that was also at the beginning of the arc.
SpoilerI have a bad feeling he's going to end up having kits with Velvet.

The idea of RiverClan and ShadowClan being lost is interesting, but it was written in a way that I can tell the authors are completely running out of ideas.

I did like seeing
SpoilerDovewing and Tigerheart return, seeing Dovewing's and Ivypool's kits meet, and seeing Birchfall, Whitewing, and Ivypool react to Dovewing choosing ShadowClan.
Curious to see how the last book of the arc ties together the loose ends from River of Fire and Tigerheart's Shadow.

Overall, it's not the worst book, but it could have been done much, much better.
