The Dryad Storm by Laurie Forest
slow-paced
2.5
I'm glad I read through the whole series as its themes are very important, especially in current times (racism, sexism, religious extremism etc.)
Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the book as much as I had hoped. The pacing felt so weird, 70% of the book is just bad after worse things happening, upping the stakes with the final battle feeling really underwhelming. I loved the twist in the second half but I feel like it didn't matter as much in the grand scheme of things as it could have.
The pairing after pairing of people also got so tedious, some so very random just to show that inter-species mingling is the way to go. It would have been fine to have single characters, just saying. The weird focus that got put on sex and showing every other character with visible marks that characters have "bonded" or "mated" got written so often that it irked me after a while.
Another thing that came up negatively for me was the insane use of cursive to force intonation. I understand the use of it to some degree, but in the first 60% of the book there was at least one of those on each page! The words "crooning" and "snarling" also got so overused that they threw me off while reading.
All in all a good ending to the 5 part series, but it doesn't come close to the first book.
